Abstract: Personal histories constantly foster a vague sense of optimism, as the most complex experiences are seemingly left behind. Although the end of history has not come to pass, evil presents itself, more often than not, as an accident produced by personal error or by a lack of vigilance on the part of those entrusted with our well-being. The present study, through a sincere approach, aims to question the validity of such an overly optimistic mindset, with a concrete perspective on the fears that arise in the application of jus puniendi. Using any form of violence creates trauma, and keeping the coherence of oneself is a difficult challenge. Beyond a philosophical dilemma without answer or resolution, taking an inner stance toward the volatile and permeable boundary between good and evil, at least with credibility and without harmful compromise, is essential in preserving the last fragile sentiment left in Pandora’s box: hope. Accepting the absurdity in everyday life, humor and self-irony cleanse the soul. The Czech people, through the voice of Jaroslav Hašek, made Josef Švejk – and, in our opinion, we have a lot to learn from him.
