Abstract: Do we like being lawyers? Is the lawyer really meant to reconcile two worlds: that of truth and that of justice? Do we really feel the tension between the two? Does it manage to guide us on the path of inspiration of good laws designed to alleviate the natural weaknesses of the egoic human being for whom social life is a possible sum of individual weaknesses, individual avatars? Does this legal cogitation ensure the victory of the great constants of law: libertas sive voluntas, equitas, bona fides, officium pietatis erga proximos? Or, on the contrary, does idolatry, born out of fear of its own weaknesses, inexorably gain? Can the anxious vision of one's own frustrations be enlightened and healed by good andjust laws? I already think the number of questions has tired us. Guardian of honor, the law can only be the same everywhere, equal to itself and the values it protects. However, a recently read book: `Bestiary. Seven stories of surgeons and their outrageous surgeries`, Catalin Vasilescu, Ed. Humanitas, Bucharest, 2023, also exposes the wrong composition of the society of people and, perhaps, of all the above hopes. The seven stories lead us neither to the world of crime nor to the world of those wronged by fate, but to the desire of some doctors to save their patients. And the difficult part of their work doesn't seem to be the medical part. The ambitions, the vanities, the envy and the lack of intelligence of those around them provoke a horizon of amazement and disillusionment that prompts reflections on human nature and, for me, on the cause for which the right lacks, today, in Romania, such heroes.
Keywords: bestiary, doctor, lawyer, monsters, victims, heroes, models.
